Axel shouldn't be alive.
Not that it was exactly news; he'd spent the better part of a decade just existing when he shouldn't have been doing that either. But there was something wholly defiant and more than a little pointless about dragging himself out of oblivion just to return to this state.
Whatever. Gift horse, mouth, and so on.
The crap icing on top of the crap cake was the fact that he was evidently alone here. With Sora picking off the Organization members one by one and Riku sweeping in behind him to take care of anything nonexistent left alive, Axel probably should have expected that. But it was still a bit of a shock to make it back to the World That Never Was and find himself greeted by his old lackeys in the Assassins, as if nothing ever happened. Axel had been able to control Dusks despite his betrayal and subsequent witch hunt, but he hadn't taken the risk of the Assassins' loyalties when they were such high-functioning Nobodies.
If anything, he'd expected to walk straight into Xemnas's hands and go down fighting. Yeah, okay, not the best idea when he'd just gotten back from dying himself--if still the kind of thing that might help Sora out. But there didn't seem to be any trace of the Organization here. Axel had to wonder if Sora was even alive somewhere. Maybe the silence here meant the kid had actually done it.
Something was off, Axel realized from where he stood in a pillar of black and red at the top of the skyscraper. The portal had taken him here properly, yes, but the way he'd requested transit had been different. As if the World That Never Was hadn't been all that far from Hollow Bastion.
As if they shared the same world.
